When visiting a foreign country, not only is it respectful to take the time to learn a few words of the local language, it can be a lot of fun, but most of all it is so incredibly useful. Speaking a few words of Thai (to get by) can open doors to opportunities not enjoyed by mere Muggles.
For instance, when eating in tourist areas, while seemingly cheap for European standards, prices can be inflated and being able to pop into a little noodle shop and convey a few words of what you would like to eat, as well as words of thanks and appreciation, can go a long way. I mean, do you want to spend 400 baht on dinner or 60 baht?
Street food markets can be a fun place to have something to eat, either by the roadside or as a takeaway to be enjoyed at home. Knowing some phrases, the odd word and numbers can be indispensable when trying to avoid mutual embarrassment and confusion.
This brief lesson will provide you with enough information to be able to stay in Thailand indefinitely. Speaking Thai isn't imperative, but it can make life easier, cheaper and much more fulfilled.
